Northcote Carpet & Flooring

Carpet and flooring in Northcote

Northcote lies between the Merri and Darebin creeks, 8 km north-east of the CBD, with High Street as its spine, from Westgarth over Ruckers Hill to the town hall and Northcote Plaza. It’s about 24 km by road from our Huntingdale showroom. Its 1880s cottages and row houses were built in local brick, and many later homes are double-fronted or weatherboard Californian bungalows. We also cover Northcote South.

We’ve laid floors here before: see photos from a Northcote project, including a carpeted bedroom.

Cut pile, loop or twist for the bedrooms?

  • Cut pile has the tips of the yarn cut, so it feels soft and even. Plush styles are the softest but show footprints; twist styles hide them better.
  • Loop pile leaves the yarn in loops. It’s hard-wearing and hides marks well, and suits studies and busy rooms. Large loops can snag on pets’ claws.
  • Cut and loop combines the two to make a subtle pattern in the surface.
  • For most bedrooms, a cut pile or twist in wool, triexta or nylon is the comfortable choice for bare feet.

Frequently asked questions

Which carpet hides footprints?

Twist and loop piles hide footprints and vacuum marks best. Plush cut piles show them, which some people like and others don’t.

Is loop pile OK with a cat?

A tight, small loop is fine for most homes. Large, loose loops can catch on claws, so a cut pile is safer with pets that scratch.

Can you lay carpet over the original floorboards?

Yes. Carpet goes down on gripper strips and underlay over the boards, and they stay underneath, untouched apart from the fixings.

How a job runs

It starts with a phone call or an enquiry. We arrange a time for the free measure, Monday to Saturday between 7am and 7pm, and bring the mobile showroom so you can compare samples in your own light. Your written quote is emailed within 24 hours of the measure. When you’re ready, our installation team lays the floor, and we can take up the old one and move the furniture first.
