Carpet and flooring in North Melbourne
North Melbourne sits just north-west of the CBD, between Victoria Street, Flemington Road and CityLink, with the Errol Street shops and the 1883 town hall at its centre. It’s about 23 km by road from our Huntingdale showroom. Most of its homes are Victorian: detached houses and one- and two-storey terraces built close to the street.
In a two-storey terrace, the stairs are part of the flooring decision from the start.
What a staircase costs
Stairs are priced separately from the rooms, in three parts:
- Material: about 13 m² of carpet or flooring for every 16 steps, at the price of the range you choose.
- Carpet installation: about $600 for an average staircase, plus underlay at $6–$10/m² on the stair area.
- Hybrid, timber, vinyl plank or laminate: $1,600 to install on a 16-step staircase, plus the flooring. Longer flights are priced in proportion.
As a guide, 16 steps supplied and installed come to about $1,240–$1,300 in mid-range nylon carpet, $1,570–$1,620 in wool, $2,320 in 8.5mm hybrid and from $2,760 in engineered oak. Winders, landings and patterned carpet are measured and quoted on site. Weighing up the two looks? Read carpet vs timber stairs.

North Melbourne flooring FAQs
Is carpet or timber better on stairs?
Carpet gives grip, even in socks, softens a fall and quietens footsteps beside the bedrooms. Timber and hybrid give a sharp, clean look and are easy to sweep, but need good nosings to manage slipperiness.
Can the stairs be carpeted if the hallway is timber?
Yes. It’s a common combination: a hard floor downstairs and carpet on the stairs and upstairs, with a neat finish where the two meet at the bottom step.
Do you lay floors in townhouses and apartments too?
Yes. For apartments and homes in a body corporate, there’s a 10% charge on the installed price, and we plan the work around lifts and building rules.
