Carpet and flooring in Carlton
Carlton runs from the edge of the CBD past the Carlton Gardens and the Royal Exhibition Building to the University of Melbourne, with Lygon Street at its heart, about 21 km by road from our Huntingdale showroom. Grand Victorian terraces sit beside student apartments and new developments.
We also cover Carlton South.
When the floors go in during a renovation
In a renovation, the floors are one of the last trades in. A typical order:
- Structural and subfloor work, including any levelling or new boards, by your builder.
- Plastering, joinery and painting. Painting before carpet goes down avoids drips on the new floor.
- Hard floors, then the skirting refitted or scotia added; your painter touches up the skirting afterwards.
- Carpet last, so it isn’t damaged by other trades.
Book the measure once the rooms are close to finished so the measurements are final, and we’ll work to your builder’s schedule. Our installation and care guide has more on preparing for installation.

Carlton flooring questions
Should the floors go in before or after the kitchen?
Usually after the kitchen cabinets, so the floor runs up to the kickboards and the cabinets don’t sit on a floating floor. Check with your kitchen maker.
Do you lay floors in student apartments?
Yes. Hard-wearing solution-dyed nylon carpet or hybrid suits rentals, and apartment and body corporate jobs in homes add 10% to the installed price.
What if the subfloor needs work?
We check the subfloor at the measure. Levelling and other preparation for hard floors is quoted before you decide; structural work such as new joists is for your builder.
The CarpetAce difference
The person who quotes your job knows how to install it. That’s the idea Tony Chalhoub, a carpet installer for more than 20 years, built CarpetAce on in 2010. Today we’re a family-owned business with more than 40 years in flooring and a 5.0 rating from more than 300 Google reviews. Read our story.
How a job runs
It starts with a phone call or an enquiry. We arrange a time for the free measure, Monday to Saturday between 7am and 7pm, and bring the mobile showroom so you can compare samples in your own light. Your written quote is emailed within 24 hours of the measure. When you’re ready, our installation team lays the floor, and we can take up the old one and move the furniture first.
