Flooring for Kallista homes
Kallista is a village on the eastern side of the Dandenong Ranges National Park, surrounded by the tall eucalypts of Sherbrooke Forest. It’s about 30 km by road from our Huntingdale showroom. First called South Sassafras and settled from 1893, it took its name, from a Greek word for “most beautiful”, in 1925; C.J. Dennis wrote much of The Sentimental Bloke here, and its guest houses later gave way to family homes.
In an older cottage, the first question is often what to do with the original boards.
Keep, cover or replace the old boards?
- Cover them with carpet: the boards stay underneath, untouched apart from the fixings, and the room gets warmer and quieter.
- Cover them with a floating floor: hybrid or engineered timber floats over sound, flat boards on an underlay, with no glue or nails into the old floor.
- Either way, the choice can be undone: because the boards stay in place, a future owner can still uncover them.
- Replace them only if they’re rotten, badly damaged or springy; that’s a carpenter’s job before the new floor goes in.

Kallista flooring FAQs
Will a floating floor damage the old boards?
No. It isn’t fixed to them, so they’re left as they are underneath.
Can you tell if the boards are sound?
We check for soft spots, bounce and big gaps at the measure, and tell you if anything needs a carpenter first.
Do you lay floors in hills cottages?
Yes. We plan access along narrow roads and steep driveways at the measure.
