Flooring for homes in The Patch
The Patch is a mainly rural locality on the east side of Sherbrooke Forest in the higher Dandenong Ranges, named after a clearing in the black-butts made by a timber-getter in the 1860s. It’s about 32 km by road from our Huntingdale showroom. Its farms once grew berries for the jam factory at Monbulk; today its houses spread out around a small township with a hall, general store, church and primary school.
In older hills homes, cold air coming up through the floorboards is a common complaint.
Draughts through old floorboards
- Where draughts come from: gaps between old boards let cool air rise from the subfloor, especially in homes on stumps.
- Carpet and underlay cover the gaps completely, which is the simplest way to make a draughty room feel warmer.
- Hybrid and engineered timber float over the boards on an underlay, which also blocks the gaps if the boards are sound and flat.
- Loose or soft boards should be fixed by a carpenter first; we check them at the measure.
- Wool is naturally insulating, so it feels warm underfoot on cold mornings.

It stops air coming up through the floor. Draughts under doors or around windows are a separate job.
