Flooring for Princes Hill homes
Princes Hill is the part of Carlton north of the Melbourne General Cemetery and east of Princes Park, in the City of Yarra. It’s about 25 km by road from our Huntingdale showroom. Subdivided by the colonial government in the late 1870s, with generous rear lanes and the wide boulevard of Pigdon Street, it has a uniform streetscape of mostly single-storey Victorian and Edwardian homes and very few shops.
In smaller homes, how the floors meet from room to room makes a big difference.
One floor throughout, or a change between rooms?
- One floor throughout makes a small home feel bigger, with no lines at the doorways. It works best with a hard floor through the living areas and hallway.
- Carpet in the bedrooms, timber elsewhere is the most common mix. The change goes under the bedroom door, so it’s hidden when the door is closed.
- Trims: where floors of different heights meet, a trim covers the edge and smooths the step. We plan each one at the measure.
- Rear extensions: a different floor in the new part of the house can mark the change from old to new, or the same floor can tie them together.

Princes Hill flooring questions
Will a trim be a trip hazard?
Trims are low and bevelled to smooth the change in height. Where floors are close in height, the trim is barely noticeable underfoot.
Can the hallway be timber and the front room carpet?
Yes. It’s a classic look in a Victorian cottage, with the change at the doorway.
Is herringbone too busy for a small home?
Not necessarily. In a hallway or one main room, herringbone adds interest; across the whole house, plain planks are calmer.
