Upwey is a hillside suburb in the Yarra Ranges, 2 km west of Belgrave and about 25 km by road from our Huntingdale showroom. First called Mast Gully, it took its name from a homestead built in 1897, and its shops sit near the station, away from the Burwood Highway. It grew as weekenders became permanent homes and wartime evacuees chose to stay.

- The hearth stays as it is. We lay the new floor up to the existing hearth or heater base and finish the edge neatly. Any change to the heater or hearth is a job for a heating installer.
- Carpet: keep it clear of the hearth. Wool is naturally slow to ignite, but any carpet can be marked by an ember, so use a fire screen with an open fire.
- Timber and hybrid can be laid around a hearth. Check your heater’s manual for the floor and clearance it needs, and tell us at the measure.
- Firewood and ash: a mat where the wood comes in saves the floor from bark and grit.

Do I need to move the wood heater?
No. We work around it and leave the heater and hearth as they are.
Which carpet colour hides ash and dust?
A mid-tone or flecked carpet. Very dark carpet shows pale ash, and very light carpet shows soot and dirt.
Is wool carpet worth it in a cold climate?
Wool is warm, naturally insulating and resilient. Over a good 10mm underlay, it makes a cold room feel noticeably cosier.
