Carpet and flooring in St Kilda West
St Kilda West sits between Fitzroy Street and Middle Park, around Catani Gardens and the West Beach foreshore, about 15 km by road from our Huntingdale showroom. Its wide streets hold grand Victorian and Edwardian homes, many now divided into apartments, beside mid-century and modern blocks.
Rooms in these big old houses are often wider than a carpet roll.
Big rooms and carpet joins
Most carpet comes off a roll 3.66 m wide, and some ranges come 4 m wide. A room wider than the roll needs a join and a fill piece cut from another length of the same carpet. Here’s how we handle it:
- We plan the layout at the measure, using the fewest joins and keeping them out of walkways and doorways where we can. We do our best, though a big room will always need at least one.
- The pile runs the same way on every piece, so the colour and texture match across the join.
- 4 m wide carpet can avoid a join in some rooms, but those ranges cost much more per m², so it’s rarely the better choice.
Our carpet price guide has a worked example of a full carpet job.

Frequently asked questions
Why does a big room need more carpet than its floor area?
Because carpet is bought off the roll. A 4 × 4 m room in 3.66 m carpet needs two lengths, about 30 m² of carpet for 16 m² of floor, unless the offcut can be used in another room.
Can the offcut be used elsewhere?
Often, yes. Fill pieces and small rooms such as robes and hallways can be cut from offcuts of the same carpet where they fit, which is why it pays to measure the whole home together.
Will the join be visible?
A well-made join is hard to spot, but in some carpets and some light it can show slightly. We place joins where they’re least noticeable and talk you through the layout at the measure.
Why CarpetAce
We’re not like other flooring stores. In many stores the person who measures and quotes never lays a floor, and the job is handed to an installer on a work order. Tony Chalhoub, a carpet installer for more than 20 years, founded CarpetAce in 2010 so that every job is measured and quoted by people who know how to install it.
We’re family-owned, with more than 40 years in flooring, and rated 5.0 from more than 300 Google reviews.
