By Tony Chalhoub, founder of CarpetAce and a carpet installer for more than 20 years.
- Carpet supply: from $20.50/m² (entry level), $43.50/m² (mid-range solution-dyed nylon), $68.30/m² (wool, triexta and high-end nylon) and about $110/m² (premium wool).
- Installing the carpet we supply: $11 to $13.60/m², depending on the carpet’s weight.
- 10mm underlay: $6 to $10/m².
- Taking up and disposing of old carpet: about $8/m².
- Three bedrooms (about 40 m²) of mid-range nylon, supplied and installed with new underlay: about $3,230 to $3,500.
- The roll-width trap: carpet comes on 3.66 m wide rolls, so a 4 × 4 m room needs a join. Using cross-joined fills, it takes about 19 m² of carpet to cover 16 m² of floor. Measuring the whole house at once lets fill pieces be cut from offcuts.

| Carpet installation (with carpet we supply), over 65oz | $13.60/m² |

The oz figure is the carpet’s face weight; we tell you which band your carpet falls into. Installation, underlay, removal and furniture moving are charged on the measured floor area. The carpet price includes an allowance for offcuts and joins.
Example: three bedrooms, about 40 m²
Supplied and installed with new underlay, old carpet taken up and furniture moved. No stairs.
| Carpet | Carpet supply (offcuts and joins included) | Total, supplied and installed |
|---|---|---|
| Entry-level | about $900 | about $2,220 to $2,490 |
| Solution-dyed nylon, mid-range | about $1,910 | about $3,230 to $3,500 |
| High-end nylon, triexta or mid-range wool | about $3,010 | about $4,330 to $4,590 |
| Premium wool | about $4,840 | about $6,160 to $6,420 |
The range comes from the installation band and the underlay you choose. In an apartment or body corporate building, add 10%: mid-range nylon becomes about $3,560 to $3,850. A single 4 × 3 m bedroom (12 m²) in mid-range nylon is about $1,550 to $1,620, including the $450 small-job charge.
What changes the price
- The carpet: fibre, quality and weight set both the supply price and the installation band.
- Room shapes: carpet comes on 3.66 m wide rolls, so a room wider than that needs a join and a fill piece, which adds carpet. We do our best to keep joins out of hallways and other high-traffic areas, even if a roll has to be cut to shape offsite.
- Stairs: every staircase is different, so stairs are priced at the measure.
- Floor preparation: uneven or damaged floors are checked and quoted at the measure.
- Access: apartments and body corporate buildings add 10%.
- Job size: jobs under 20 m² carry a $450 small-job charge.
Why we measure before we quote
In most flooring stores, the salesperson who measures and quotes never lays the floor, and details get lost between the quote and the job. Tony founded CarpetAce in 2010 after more than 20 years as a carpet installer, so your job is measured and quoted by people who install floors. Our mobile showroom brings samples to your home, we measure, and you get a written quote by email within 24 hours.
Frequently asked questions
How much does carpet cost per square metre in Melbourne?
At CarpetAce, carpet starts at $20.50/m² supply only. Mid-range solution-dyed nylon is $43.50/m², and high-end nylon, triexta and mid-range wool are $68.30/m². Installation of carpet we supply adds $11 to $13.60/m², and underlay $6 to $10/m². All prices include GST.
How much does it cost to carpet three bedrooms?
About $3,230 to $3,500 for 40 m² of mid-range solution-dyed nylon, supplied and installed with new underlay, old carpet removed and furniture moved. Mid-range wool is about $4,330 to $4,590.
Is installation included in the price per square metre?
No. Supply prices cover the carpet only. Installation, underlay, removal and furniture moving are listed separately above, so you can see exactly what you pay for.
Is wool carpet worth the extra cost?
For three bedrooms, mid-range wool costs about $1,100 more than mid-range nylon. Wool is a natural fibre with a resilient pile; solution-dyed nylon is easier on stains and fading. We bring both to your home so you can compare them in your own light.
Do you charge to measure and quote?
No. The measure and quote are free, and the written quote arrives by email within 24 hours of the measure.
Can you restretch my old carpet instead?
We restretch carpet from $450. If your carpet is more than 15 years old, we’ll advise replacing it rather than restretching it.
