Carpet and flooring in Carlton North
Carlton North is almost all residential, 4 km north of the CBD, with Princes Park and the Melbourne General Cemetery to the west and the Rathdowne Village shops near Curtain Square. It’s about 24 km by road from our Huntingdale showroom. Its streets are lined with brick terraces, many two storeys with cast-iron lace and polychrome brickwork, and Federation houses and Californian bungalows further north.
Old carpet doesn’t always need replacing: sometimes it just needs restretching.
Restretch or replace?
- Restretching (from $450) suits carpet that’s in good condition but has developed ripples or loose areas. We pull it tight again and refit it on the gripper strips.
- Replace it if the pile is worn or matted in the walkways, stains won’t come out, the backing is breaking down or the underlay has crumbled.
- Before selling or leasing, a restretch can tidy a room quickly, while new carpet makes a bigger difference to the look.
- Not sure? We’ll look at it at the measure and tell you honestly which makes sense.

Carlton North flooring FAQs
Why does carpet ripple?
Usually because it wasn’t stretched tightly enough when it was laid, or because heavy furniture was dragged across it. Humidity and age can make it worse.
Can every carpet be restretched?
Most can, if the backing is still sound. Very old carpet with a brittle backing may not stretch well, and then replacing it is the better option.
Do you lay timber in terraces too?
Yes. Engineered oak and Australian species suit the front rooms and hallways of a terrace, and we can remove and refit the skirting for $20/m².
