Carpet and flooring in Skye
Skye sits about halfway between Seaford and Cranbourne, in the City of Frankston. It’s about 29 km by road from our Huntingdale showroom. Named after the Scottish island several 1850s settlers came from, it took back that name in 1964, and from the 1980s housing grew north of the old village, leaving homes to the west and small farms to the east, with a recreation reserve and golf course nearby.
Many homes built from the 1980s have sheet flooring rather than timber boards under the carpet, and that affects the choice of new floor.
Particleboard sheet floors
- How to tell: particleboard comes in large sheets, often marked with print, rather than narrow boards. We’ll check at the measure.
- Carpet suits it well: gripper strips and underlay go straight down, and the carpet rides over small joins.
- Hybrid and vinyl plank float over particleboard if it’s flat and firm. Raised joins between sheets may need sanding back or levelling first.
- Water is the risk: particleboard swells if it gets wet, so any soft or swollen patches near laundries, kitchens and doors are checked first.
- Squeaks come from sheets moving on the joists, which a carpenter can fix before the new floor goes down.

Skye flooring questions
Is hybrid OK in a laundry with a particleboard floor?
Hybrid resists water, but the particleboard underneath doesn’t. It’s fine for everyday splashes; a leak or flood can still damage the sheets below.
Do I need to replace a swollen sheet?
If a sheet is soft or swollen, it should be replaced before new flooring goes down. That’s a carpenter’s job, and we’ll point it out at the measure.
Can new carpet go straight over particleboard?
Yes. Carpet is laid on new underlay over gripper strips, which suits sheet floors well.
