Flooring for Travancore homes
Travancore is a small residential pocket of Flemington between Mount Alexander Road and CityLink, in Moonee Valley. It’s about 25 km by road from our Huntingdale showroom. It was subdivided as the Travancore Estate in 1924, on land that racehorse breeder John Madden had named after the Indian state, and its streets, with names such as Mooltan, Cashmere and Lucknow, are lined with Californian bungalows and pre-war flats.
For engineered timber, there are two ways to lay it, and the choice depends on the floor underneath.
Floating or glued engineered timber?
- Floating ($28/m² plus $6/m² underlay): the boards lock together on an underlay without being fixed down. It’s quicker and suits sound timber subfloors.
- Glued down ($35/m² plus $15/m² adhesive): the boards are bonded to the subfloor, usually concrete or a flat sheet floor. It feels solid and sounds quieter underfoot.
- The subfloor decides: gluing needs a flat, dry, sound base, so we check the floor and choose the method at the measure.
- In flats, glued timber or carpet is often the quieter choice for neighbours below; check your building’s rules first.

- We bring the samples. The mobile showroom comes to your home with carpet, timber and hybrid samples, and we measure every room.

Why does the price guide show a range for timber?
Because the method isn’t decided until we’ve seen the subfloor. The range covers both floating and glued installation.
Does a floating floor sound hollow?
It can sound a little more hollow than a glued floor. A good underlay helps.
Do you lay floors in pre-war flats?
Yes. Apartment and body corporate jobs add 10% to the installed price, and we plan around access and building rules.
