Making carpet last in busy areas
Carpet rarely wears evenly. The hallway, the path from the door to the couch and the top of the stairs take most of the traffic. To make it last:
- Choose density over height: a dense, lower pile resists flattening in walkways better than a long, loose one.
- Pick a resilient fibre: solution-dyed nylon and wool both spring back well.
- Use a good underlay: 10mm underlay from Airstep, Underlay King or Airlay supports the pile.
- Vacuum the walkways often and use mats at outside doors, so grit doesn’t grind into the fibres.

Ringwood East flooring questions
Why does carpet flatten in the hallway?
Constant foot traffic crushes the pile along the same path. A denser carpet, good underlay and regular vacuuming slow it down.
Is loop pile good for hallways?
A tight, dense loop wears very well and hides footprints. Avoid large loops if you have pets, because claws can catch.
Should the stairs match the hallway?
Usually, yes. The same carpet on the stairs and hallway looks continuous, and both take heavy traffic, so choose for durability.
