Carpet and flooring for Ormond’s period homes
Ormond grew up around its railway station and North Road, and many of its streets are lined with Californian bungalows, Edwardian houses and interwar homes. It’s about 7 km by road from our Huntingdale showroom.
These houses have their own quirks: original hardwood floorboards, rooms that aren’t quite square, and hallways that run the length of the house. They reward careful measuring and laying, which is where an installer-led business makes a difference.
Long hallways and original boards
- Hallways: a long hallway is the most-walked part of the house. We do our best to keep carpet joins out of hallways, even if a large roll has to be cut to shape before it comes in. A dense cut pile or loop in wool or solution-dyed nylon wears best.
- Original floorboards: carpet can be laid over sound boards with new underlay, and the boards stay protected underneath.
- Rear extensions: many bungalows have a newer kitchen and family room at the back. Engineered timber or hybrid there, with carpet in the bedrooms, is a common combination.
Our guide to choosing carpet explains pile types, fibres and weights in plain terms.

Ormond flooring FAQs
Will there be a join in our hallway?
We do our best to avoid one. Hallways are usually narrower than a 3.66 m carpet roll, so most can be laid in one piece. Where a join is needed elsewhere, we place it away from the main walkways where we can.
Can you lay carpet over original floorboards?
Yes. Carpet goes over sound boards on gripper strips with new 10mm underlay, so the boards stay underneath.
Do you lay herringbone?
Yes. We supply engineered oak and Australian species in herringbone as well as plank. Herringbone takes longer to lay, so installation is quoted at the measure.
